Chief Inspector (Posthumous) Lam Yuen-yee of Small Boat Division (SBDIV), who died in a boat collision in the course of duty on September 25, was laid to rest at the Gallant Garden in Wo Hop Shek on November 2, following a funeral with full Police honours at the Universal Funeral Parlour in Hung Hom.
Among those paying their last respects to Ms Lam at the funeral were Chief Executive Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Secretary for Administration Mr John Lee, Financial Secretary Mr Paul Chan, Secretary for Justice Ms Teresa Cheng, SC, and a number of senior officers from government bureaux, departments and other disciplined services. Commissioner Siu Chak-yee led Force directorate officers and representatives from Major Formations, Regions, Districts and Force staff associations to bid farewell to Ms Lam at the funeral parlour.
Officers from the Marine Region, the Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB), the New Territories South Region, the Critical Infrastructure Security Coordination Centre, the Complaints Against Police Office, the Personnel Wing, the Support Wing and the Hong Kong Police College escorted the hearse to the Gallant Garden. A bugler from the Police Band sounded the “Last Post” as Ms Lam’s coffin was lowered into the grave.
In memory of Kary
Upon graduation from university, Ms Lam, also known as Kary, joined the Police Force as a Police Constable in 2007. Whilst working as a Police Constable in the Kowloon City Division and CCB, Kary’s outstanding work performance was recognised and she was subsequently promoted to Inspector in 2010. Afterwards, Kary took up frontline leading roles in the Investigation Team, the Police Tactical Unit and the Marine Region. Every person who encountered Kary will always have a clear abiding memory of her lovely smiling face. In the face of challenges, she remained steadfast in accomplishing every mission with bravery. Kary was a selfless officer who would always seek to support other colleagues, so she was well liked and greatly respected by colleagues. During Operation TIDERIDER, Kary was one of the sub-unit commanders of the Regional Response Contingent, leading her colleagues through the most difficult period, and demonstrating true loyalty, bravery and tenacity.
With a love for the ocean, Kary achieved an advanced diving qualification and used to work as a part-time beach lifeguard. Kary aspired to serve as a marine police officer when she joined the Force, and after achieving this goal, she applied to join SBDIV to perform more arduous tasks in maritime policing. She led colleagues to conduct many rescues and successfully detected numerous smuggling cases with multiple arrests.
Kary possessed endless energy and always lived her life to the full, both at work and in her leisure time. Kary played for the Police Women’s Soccer Team for many years. As the team’s vice-captain, she was supportive and caring to her teammates. Notably she represented the Force on four occasions overseas in the World Police and Fire Games.
One of Kary’s colleagues recalled that Kary was a partner with an unswerving determination. Once she set a target, she would always do her best to achieve it. Kary worked shoulder to shoulder with her colleagues and was a role model for them. All of her colleagues felt extremely lucky to have worked alongside her. Kary had a bubbly personality and a larger than life attitude. She is greatly missed.
