The “Traffic Accident Investigation” program designed by the officers of Traffic Hong Kong Island was awarded the Bronze Award and the Best Business Process Re-engineering Award in the first Force Mobile Application Design Competition. With the “Traffic Accident Investigation” program, officers want to digitalise the current manual procedures of handling traffic accidents, such as sketching maps, filling in the Road Accident Report Booklet (Pol. 284A), making notes on Police Notebook and processing witness statements.
The program reduces the chance of errors due to manual input through the use of automatic data entry such as QR codes. Frontline officers can also record the location and damage of the vehicles involved by taking videos and photos through the program, so that officers can gather information required for investigation efficiently and effectively. The program simplifies the processes for handling traffic accidents and reduce the time for conducting on-site investigations. Roads temporarily closed due to the accident can be reopened sooner to minimise inconvenience caused to other road users. Information gathered and temporarily stored on the phone can be uploaded to backend systems by a simple key-stroke, easing the burden of handling tedious paperwork and saving the time for transferring documents. Officers hope the program can streamline the process of handling traffic accidents on site to display the Force’s professional image.
