On October 21, the Police Public Relations Branch (PPRB) organised a sharing session and invited Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Professor Anthony Fung as the speaker. The sharing session aimed to enhance officers’ understanding of youth culture as well as their skills in organising youth activities and communicating with youth. Over 150 officers from the Police Community Relations Office (PCRO) and PPRB participated in the event.
Professor Fung’s research interests include popular culture and youth studies. He shared with officers his research results on youth issues, from which he summarised the key points and skills of youth engagement. Officers also took the opportunity to exchange views with Professor Fung proactively and discussed the challenges and opportunities of youth engagement.
After the sharing session by Professor Fung, Chief Superintendent of PPRB Kwok Ka-chuen and Senior Superintendent (Media Liaison and Communication) of PPRB Leung Chung-man took the opportunity to listen to the opinions of PCRO officers from different police districts on youth engagement work and the challenges they faced. They also introduced Junior Police Call (JPC)’s new strategy “IDEAS@JPC”, which classifies JPC’s activities into five categories, namely Innovation, Discipline, Exposure, Adventure and Synergy. Police districts are encouraged to launch youth activities according to this framework in order to provide diversified activities to youth.
In addition to enhancing officers’ understanding of youth, the sharing session enabled PCRO and PPRB officers to exchange views on youth issues to facilitate coordination of youth activities at headquarters and district levels.
