The Hong Kong Sea School (Sea School) located in Stanley was founded in 1946. It unleashes the students’ potential through water sports and boarding life. Lui Cheung-lung (Ben), a graduate from Sea School, is now stationed in Sau Mau Ping District. His experiences at school and in Junior Police Call (JPC) inspired him to join the Force after graduation.
“I immigrated to Hong Kong from the Mainland when I was twelve years old. However, I did not have many schools to choose from because of the difference in education model between the two places. I lived in Tin Shui Wai but was enrolled by Sea School in Stanley. ”
Ben could not speak Cantonese initially when he came to Hong Kong. He faced difficulty in his studies and communication with the classmates. “Since I couldn't change the environment, I chose to change myself. I took the initiative to chat with my classmates to practice Cantonese and integrate with them. To meet the school’s requirement, I did my best to learn swimming as well.”
When Ben was in Secondary Three, his teacher recommended him to join the Junior Police Call (JPC) of Western District, which became a turning point in his life. “JPC organised different kinds of activities, which were very satisfying. I got along with the mentors and peer members of JPC like a family. JPC also gave me the chance to communicate with people from different walks of life, which has broadened my perspective and life circle. Subsequently, I was even fortunate enough to become an Advanced Leader responsible for coordinating activities.” His experience in JPC further inspired him to join the Force after graduation. “The frequent contact with police officers increased my understanding of the Force and allowed me to unveil my sense of mission to help others enthusiastically. With the encouragement of the officers, I applied to join the Force after graduation.”
Ben said that the disciplinary training at Sea School helped him adapt to the Recruit Police Constable Foundation Training Course of the Police College. Although he has joined the Force for only a year or so, he fully understands that he can help the public by resolving a case regardless of its gravity. His short-term goal is to get trained in the Police Tactical Unit for improving his professional capabilities.
The Principal of Hong Kong Sea School Mr Chan To-pui, who was quite impressed by Ben in his school days, recalled that Ben became outgoing after joining JPC. He points out that the students from Sea School have always been the source of fresh blood for the disciplined forces. Over the past decade, 40 per cent of the graduates have joined the Police Force. The school, being supported by Hong Kong Island Region, Marine Region and Western District, co-organises a series of activities to increase the students' understanding of police work and helps those aspiring to join the Force get prepared.
The Supervisor cum Chairman of School Management Committee of Hong Kong Sea School Mr Cowen Chiu points out that navigation at sea requires discipline, and therefore discipline training has been a tradition of Sea School. As the times have changed, joining the disciplined forces has become the main way out for Sea School students. The Secretary for Security Mr Tang Ping-keung shared his experience and duties as the Secretary with three students in the Be a Government Official for a Day Programme 2021. He also attend the opening ceremony of Sea School in September this year with the representatives of disciplined forces, which fully affirms Sea School’s commitment to training talents.
