Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) has launched the Scameter, a new one-stop online scam and cyber pitfall search engine, and the CyberSec Series, a set of three storybooks, to raise public awareness of crime prevention and cyber security.
The Scameter available on CyberDefender.hk, a one-stop online information platform, helps the public identify scams and cyber pitfalls. Whenever a citizen encounters unknown calls, suspicious online sellers, unsolicited friend requests, arbitrary recruitment SMS messages and suspected fraudulent investment websites, they can enter the account name or number of the suspicious social media platform, account number of the payment recipient, phone number, email address, website address etc., into the Scameter to assess instantly the risk of online scam and cyber pitfall. The search results will be shown in different colours to indicate various risk levels. The information or ratings of Scameter originated from various reliable sources, including crime reports from the public to the Police, open-source data provided by reputable organisations and information security agencies. In just two weeks, the Scameter attracted more than 30 000 searches. Members of the public are advised to set the website as their browser’s homepage or bookmark the Scameter in their mobile devices for easy access at any time.
In cultivating youngsters’ digital literacy, CSTCB has adopted the theme “iDreamStation” this year to guide the next generation into smart netizenship. In September, CSTCB published three storybooks of the CyberSec Series, namely The Secret of Donuts, AI Robot Showdown and Social Trap 1+1 for free distribution to all primary schools in Hong Kong. E-books and audiobooks have also been produced to teach children how to deal with cyber-bullying, identify online dating traps, and cultivate awareness of information security. CSTCB officers also visited different institutions proactively to share information on anti-deception and cyber security for students at tertiary, secondary and primary schools, kindergartens and special schools. CSTCB will keep organising a wide range of activities through multi-agency collaboration and disseminate online anti-deception messages and digital security information through a wide variety of activities.
