The Secretary for Justice, Ms Teresa Cheng, SC, inspected the passing-out parade for 33 probationary inspectors and 116 recruit police constables at the Hong Kong Police College on July 10.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Cheng said that the public has a rising expectation towards the quality of public services as the society has seen drastic changes in recent years. The Police have been under unprecedented challenges and tests in their work. Joining the Police at this time has fully demonstrated graduates’ determination, ability, commitment and willingness to serve the community as the future pillars of the society, she added.
Ms Cheng also noted that rule of law and national security are the cornerstones of ensuring Hong Kong’s long-term security and sustainable development. The Department of Justice (DoJ) and the Police with the motto of “Serving Hong Kong with Honour, Duty and Loyalty”, perform respective roles in upholding the rule of law and national security, as well as protecting public interest for the steady and enduring growth of “One Country, Two Systems”.
She remarked that national security tops the priority for the country, adding that the aspiration of “One Country, Two Systems” is to uphold the national sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. The HKSAR Government, including the DoJ and the Police, shall strive to implement in full the legal system and enforcement mechanisms to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests.
Lastly, Ms Cheng encouraged all graduates to face the upcoming challenges, and strive ahead with renewed perseverance, bravery and fortitude. She hoped that all graduates could embrace the vision of the Police in ensuring that Hong Kong remains one of the safest and most stable societies in the world.
