In May, representatives of the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) participated in two online INTERPOL meetings to combat transnational crimes. The meetings were coordinated by Superintendent Lau Ka-ho, who is now seconded to INTERPOL General Secretariat in Lyon, France.
On May 17, officers from the Commercial Crime Bureau, the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau, the Financial Investigation Division of the Narcotics Bureau (FI NB) and the Liaison Bureau attended the conclusion meeting of Operation “HAECHI-I”. The operation, mounted between November 2020 and March 2021, was the first INTERPOL’s operation against cyber-enabled financial crime and money laundering. Crime Units of 10 INTERPOL member jurisdictions in Asia Pacific Region, which are responsible for investigating online fraud and money laundering cases, participated in the operation. In the meeting, INTERPOL summarised the operation results and shared the latest trends of the targeted crimes. Chief Inspector of FI NB Cheung Hang-fai introduced the online investment fraud and money laundering schemes discovered by the Hong Kong Police during the operation and shared the corresponding enforcement results.
On May 18, Chief Superintendent of the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau (OCTB) Wong Wai presided over the 22nd INTERPOL Asia-Pacific Expert Group on Organized Crime (APEG) meeting as the Chairman of the expert group. In his opening speech, Mr Wong stressed that INTERPOL member jurisdictions must not allow the pandemic to restrict their international cooperation, and they should make good use of technology and innovative thinking to combat transnational organized crimes effectively. Chief Inspector Cheung Siu-lok and Senior Inspector Wong Chun-hong of OCTB also joined the meeting.
The APEG was established in 2006 by HKPF officers seconded to INTERPOL with the aim of connecting crime officers in the Asia-Pacific region for combating transnational organized crimes. Representatives from 29 INTERPOL member jurisdictions were invited to participate in the 22nd edition of the meeting. They jointly formulated the strategies for combating transnational organized crimes, laying the foundation for future joint operations.
