SJ visits Junior Police Call Summer Camp (with photo)

The Secretary for Justice, Mr Wong Yan Lung, SC, accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Lee Ming-kwai, today (August 11) visited the Junior Police Call (JPC) Fight Crime Summer Camp at Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village.

At a ceremony to promote fight crime messages, Mr Wong, who was once a JPC member, said that the development of physical fitness, a healthy personality and wisdom would help young people stay away from crimes and pursue a healthy lifestyle. He believed that JPC activities would help them to develop these three important attributes.

Calling on the community to support meaningful youth activities such as the summer camp and other JPC activities, Mr Wong said that the concerted efforts of the Police Force and the community attribute to the development of the JPC, which was now a well-established youth organisation.

Before the ceremony, the guests were treated to a drama performance by JPC members on recent JPC developments following the conclusion of a comprehensive three-year review.

The review focused on the re-organisation of the scheme, membership structure, training for members and establishment of a system of honorary presidents.

Launched in 1974, the JPC scheme had a two-tier membership of members and leaders until 2005. Following the introduction of a new rank of membership - advanced leader last year, the JPC is now a semi-uniformed organisation with a three-tier membership structure featuring members, leaders and advanced leaders.

With an accumulated membership count of about one million, the JPC scheme is one of the largest youth organisations in Hong Kong. Currently, it has about 140,000 members, of which more than 20,000 are leaders and 160 are advanced leaders.

The annual JPC Fight Crime Summer Camp, organised by the Police with sponsorship and support from various organisations, is aimed at enhancing JPC members' awareness of juvenile crimes and promoting healthy living. About 1,400 JPC members are taking part in the camp which began on August 9 and will run until tomorrow (August 12).

Anti-drug and fight crime messages are being disseminated to participants through a range of activities including talks on anti-cruelty to animals, cyber crime prevention and anti-piracy, an anti-drug model design competition, singing performances and various sports activities.
