No specific intelligence to suggest HK to be a target for terrorism

In view of the foiled terrorist attempt in the United Kingdom yesterday, Police have stepped up security monitoring and patrols at the airport to ensure public safety.

The remarks was made by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Lee Ming-kwai, this (August 11) afternoon in response to media questions on the security of Hong Kong following heightened security in the airports in the United Kingdom and other places.

Speaking at a meet-the-media session after his visit to the Junior Police Call Fight Crime Summer Camp at Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village in Ma On Shan, Mr Lee stressed that the level of terrorist threat in Hong Kong remained moderate and so far there was no specific intelligence to suggest that the territory, its airport or any air flight from Hong Kong is likely to be a target of terrorist attacks.

He pointed out that the stopping of the terrorist plot by the British authorities had clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence exchanges among law enforcement agencies around the world.

"We have been maintaining a very close liaison with our overseas counterparts and will keep a close watch on the development of the current incident to ensure the stablity and safety of Hong Kong," he added.
