Stringent action against drink driving during World Cup

Police today (July 6) remind members of the public not to drive after drinking and that stringent action will continue to be taken against drink-driving during the World Cup period.

As part of the ongoing efforts to combat drink driving, the Police have launched a territory-wide anti-drink driving campaign since June 9 at bars in different areas during the World Cup period by distributing leaflets and inviting people there to take voluntary breath tests to appeal to them not to drive after drinking.

From June 9 up to 12 noon today, the Police have conducted 2,117 visits to bars and restaurants, offered 3,825 free breath screenings for patrons and handed out more than 89,900 educational leaflets.

In addition, a total of 3,300 enforcement checks have been conducted resulting in the arrest of 85 persons for drink driving.

"The Police will continue to take stringent enforcement action for the period of World Cup Final and all motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol.

"Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and an imprisonment of three years upon conviction with 10 driving-offence points incurred whilst the maximum penalty for 'Dangerous Driving Causing Death' is a $50,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment with 10 driving-offence points incurred and disqualification from driving for at least two years," a Police spokesman said.
