Bilateral meeting between HK and Mainland Police concluded

Hong Kong Police and their Mainland counterparts will continue to hold bilateral meetings to strengthen mutual cooperation and efficiency with the aim of maintaining law and order in the two areas.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong Police made the above remarks today (December 6) following the conclusion of the 16th bilateral meeting between the Hong Kong Police and Ministry of Public Security authorities yesterday (December 5).

The Assistant Minister of Public Security, Mr Chen Zhi-min, led a delegation from the Mainland to meet the Commissioner of Police, Mr Tang King-shing, and other senior officers from various departments in the Force.

The spokesman said,¡§During the bilateral meeting, both sides reported the crime situation in Hong Kong and the Mainland and reviewed the fruitful results of mutual cooperation. The discussion also covered topics including anti-terrorism, border management and cross-boundary crimes."

On further co-operation, the Hong Kong Police and their Mainland counterparts have agreed to strengthen the exchange of commercial crime intelligence between the two areas and enhance liaison work on police training.

"The two sides have agreed to enhance cooperation in police training. We will continue to arrange to send officers to the other side for exchange programmes and explore the curriculum concerned to cope with our training needs," said the spokesman.

The Hong Kong Police also took the opportunity to introduce to its counterpart the preparatory work of the 20th Interpol Asian Regional Conference to be held in Hong Kong in March 2008.

"It is believed that the conference can enhance the image of the Hong Kong Police Force and the overall international status of Hong Kong. It can also further strengthen the cooperative relationship between Hong Kong Police and the Interpol General Secretariat and its members," the spokesman said.

During their stay in Hong Kong, Mr Chen Zhi-min and the delegation met the Secretary for Security and the Director of Immigration. They also visited Yuen Long District, Shenzhen Bay Port and the Police Tactical Unit and shared their experiences with frontline local police officers.

The delegation led by Mr Chen Zhi-min included representatives from the Hong Kong Macao Affairs Office, State Council; the Police Liaison Department, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in HKSAR; the Anti-smuggling Bureau, General Administration of Customs; the Shanghai Public Security Bureau; the Guangdong Public Security Department, and the Shenzhen and Zhuhai Public Security Bureau.

Representatives from the Hong Kong Police were senior officers in charge of the Crime Wing, Training Wing, Operations Wing and Liaison Bureau.
