Five people arrested for passing counterfeit banknotes
Police Commercial Crime Bureau officers (CCB) today (September 13) arrested two Australian males and three Taiwanese males for passing 2,100 pieces of counterfeit Kuwait Diners.
Shortly before 2 pm, the five arrested people, aged between 53 and 63, visited a bank in Central and intended to deposit KWD$42,000 banknotes into an account opened with the bank.
The amount consists of 2,100 pieces of suspected counterfeit $20 denomination of Kuwait Diners. It is believed that they intended to deposit and exchange the counterfeit banknotes to US and local currencies, and to immediately make withdrawal of the genuine cash.
Investigation revealed that the counterfeit banknotes were of average quality and all printed by toner technique, which is equivalent to colour laser printing.
It is the first time that this kind of counterfeit banknotes surfaced in Hong Kong.
The arrested people are still being detained for further enquiry.
