School transport safety campaign

Police will launch a three-week territory-wide campaign to promote school transport safety tomorrow (August 22) to tie in with the start of the new school year.

Officers from Police Road Safety Teams will distribute publicity leaflets to school bus and nanny van drivers, as well as teachers and parents to draw their attention to road safety of school children. Police officers will also visit schools to give talks on safety of travelling on school buses.

According to the School Transport Safety Rules, the driver of a school bus or nanny van should take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of passengers.

Provisional statistics show that in the first half of this year, there were 25 traffic accidents involving school buses with 50 passengers injured. The number of such accidents was the same while the number of injuries increased by 8.7% from 46 injuries when compared with the same period last year.
