Man jailed for using false instruments
A 64-year-old man was sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment for using and possessing false instrument at the District Court today (July 26).
The District Court heard that the 64-year-old Singapore male defendant produced a "Confirmation of bank funds letter" to a bank in Hong Kong in December, 2006.
The letter, purportedly issued by a bank in England, stated that the defendant had funds of US$5 billion available in a deposit account in the England bank. The defendant requested the bank in Hong Kong to keep the document and issue a letter to confirm its custody.
Due to the poor quality of the document, the bank reported the case to the Police and the defendant was arrested.
Police enquiries revealed that the defendant also processed 141 similar documents purportedly issued by different banks concerning defendant's ownership of several hundred tones of gold bullion.
Police also found a foil pack of three suspected dangerous drugs tablets in the defendant's possession.
The defendant was subsequently charged with using a false instrument, possessing a false instrument, and possession of part I poison.
He was convicted of all the offences and sentence was meted out today.
