Appeal for information on suspicious device in Happy Valley
Police today (March 27) appealed for information from members of the public on a case in which a suspicious device was discovered at Happy Valley Race Course on March 21.
At about 9.30 am, staff of the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) uncovered a suspicious device which was embedded in the track surface at the 1 200-metre starting point of the race course, during a routine inspection.
The device consisted of a 12-metre long polythene hose connected to an electrical device, a compressed gas cylinder and a camera lens. Twelve sets of two to three metal tubes were connected to the polythene host through sets of valves at regular intervals.
The intended purpose of the device is yet to be established. However, it is believed that its activation could have resulted in serious injury to horses or persons.
Initial enquiries revealed that four Chinese men, aged about 25 to 40, appeared at the 1 200-metre starting point in the evening of March 19 and in the small hours on March 21. They are believed to be in connection with the case.
Active investigations by Regional Crime Unit of Hong Kong Island are underway.
Meanwhile, the HKJC is offering a reward of $1 million for the detection of the case. The reward, valid until September 26, 2007, will be paid, either in full or pro-rata, to any member of the public, or apportioned amongst members of the public, as may be determined by the Police, giving information leading to the arrest and satisfactory prosecution of the culprit(s).
