Police seize $2 million worth of smuggled goods (with photos)
Police seized $2 million worth of suspected smuggled goods and arrested three men during an operation in Sha Tau Kok last night (October 13).
At about 7 pm yesterday, officers of the Marine Regional Task Force and Small Boat Division spotted two unlit speedboats each with two men aboard berthing along Sha Tau Kok Pier. Some workers were seen loading goods onto the first speedboat whilst the other was waiting nearby. When Police arrived at the loading spot, the speedboats fled away immediately. Three workers handling the goods were apprehended at scene.
A total of 180 boxes of cargo, including computer tower servers, controller units and games machines, were located inside a goods vehicle which was parked beside the loading spot. The total value of the cargo was estimated at about $2 million.
The three men, aged between 23 and 35, dealing with the goods were unable to produce the legally required document. They were arrested for assisting in the export of unmanifested cargo.
The case has been taken over for further investigation by the Customs and Excise Department.
