Duo jailed for using false instrument related offences

Two men aged 30 and 27 were sentenced to jail for 20 months and 42 months respectively at the District Court today (April 12) for using a false instrument and related offences.

The court heard that in October 2004, a credit card company made a report to Police Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) that somebody had used false documents to apply for credit cards from the company.

Following extensive investigation, two men aged 30 and 27, were arrested by the CCB officers while they were collecting a credit card from the company in North Point on December 9, 2004.

A subsequent house search in Shun Lee Estate, Sau Mau Ping, led to the seizure of a quantity of false credit card application documents including copies of Hong Kong identity card in the name of other persons, a lost Hong Kong identity card, some computing equipment for producing false documents and a notebook containing records of numerous credit card applications with different banks in the names of other persons.

Further enquiries revealed that the 27-year-old man had successfully used false information to obtain a credit card from a bank and had withdrawn a total of $20,000 from various automatic teller machines in Hong Kong and Shenzhen between August 13 and 21, 2004.

Police later charged the duo with offences including using copies of false instrument, using a false instrument, possession of an identity card relating to another person, theft and obtaining services by deception on September 23, 2005.

The duo pleaded guilty to 22 counts of the charges and the sentence was handed down in the District Court today.
