Territory-wide campaign to promote road safety
Police will conduct a territory-wide campaign to enhance public awareness of road safety with focus on anti-drink driving from tomorrow (April 13) to April 17.
During the first two days of the campaign, officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams will invite members of the public to take voluntary breath tests and distribute publicity leaflets in bar areas to appeal to drivers not to drive after drinking. Strict enforcement action will be taken against drink driving from April 15 to 17.
Police figures showed that there were 3 348 accidents in the first three months of this year, a decrease of 217 cases when compared with the same period in 2005. Among these cases, 16 involved drink driving.
"Motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol. Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and three years' imprisonment and penalised for 10 driving-offence points; or possible disqualification from driving," a Police spokesman said.
