Appeal for information on fatal vessel incident

Police today (March 12) appealed to members of the public to provide information on an incident which a 49-year-old man was hit by a sampan at Starling Inlet and later died early this morning.

Police received a report at about 6.15 am that the 49-year-old man was swimming at sea about 30 metres off Sha Tau Kok Pier with his friend, a 64-year-old man. A motorized sampan was speeding towards them and hit the 49-year-old man.

The man, who sustained injuries to his left chest and shoulder, was rescued but was certified dead by ambulancemen at scene.

Police are locating the sampan which fled towards Ap Chau after the incident. The vessel is black and blue in colour with one outboard engine and is about 3.5 metres long. Two men, wearing black clothes and caps, were seen on board the vessel.

Investigations by Regional Crime Unit of Marine are proceeding.
