The Innovation and Solution Lab (ISLAB) of the Information Systems Wing cooperated with Emergency Units of Hong Kong Island and New Territories South in 2020 and 2021 respectively to explore the application of RFID technology in managing and recording the gears in EU cars. After consolidating the opinions from the participating units, ISLAB, together with Happy Valley Division (HVDIV) and Mong Kok District, launched the second phase of testing since June 2022. Different from the first generation, this project has adopted an integrated design with fixed antennas installed inside the patrol cars. With a single tap of an officer on a tablet, the system would automatically stocktake the RFID-labelled equipment in a car and verify the relevant records.

In the past, officers had to perform stocktaking with a hand-held reader. Acting Sergeant of Patrol Sub-unit 4 of HVDIV Chiu Kin-wah said, “The new system greatly reduced the time required for stocktaking, from ten odd minutes to a minute, allowing my team members and I to complete the handover swiftly and attend to the scene at once.”

ISLAB will cooperate with the Counter Terrorism Response Unit and different units to extend the new system to vehicles of various settings and scenarios for further testing.
