The Cyber Training Section of the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) strives to provide training on cyber security and investigation of technology crimes for ensuring officers’ capability in dealing with ever-changing technology crimes. CSTCB organised the first Professional Certificate in Open Source Investigation Course between November and December 2021. The course had previously undergone the Internal Learning Programme Accreditation and was successfully accredited at Qualifications Framework Level 4.

A total of 29 trainees participated in the course, including officers from CSTCB and different police formations, as well as representatives from other law enforcement agencies (LEAs), namely the Immigration Department, the Customs and Excise Department, the Independent Commission Against Corruption, the Office of the Communications Authority and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data.

This 10-day course covered professional knowledge of computer networks and the Internet, as well as practical skills for gathering and analysing open source information. During the course, trainees from other LEAs also shared the application of the latest technology in their respective departments and techniques for gathering information online. At the end of the course, Chief Superintendent of CSTCB Dr Law Yuet-wing encouraged the trainees to continue to enhance their capabilities in tackling technology crimes and hoped that the course could lay a solid foundation for inter-departmental cooperation in combating technology crimes.
