Last Autumn, Sergeant (SGT) Chan Lai-chu of Regional Missing Person Unit Kowloon East came up with the idea of knitting scarves for elders living in Kowloon East Region who previously went missing from homes for the elderly or have such possibility. As the scarves carry the names of the recipients and their contact persons as well as telephone numbers, KE Operations Wing and RMPU KE endorsed the idea, which was later extended to all KE Districts.

The Project Scarf ran from last December to January, followed by distribution of scarves to elderly homes and Non-government Organisations before the Lunar New Year.

A total of 93 officers have knitted 174 scarves. While presenting the scarves to a home for the elderly, RMPU KE officers also treated the elders to a short drama to remind them of safety measures.

Officers and units have been complimented for their efforts at an award ceremony held at KE Regional Headquarters on January 23. Among the awardees were RMPU KE SGT Chan Lai-chu (The longest scarf), Training and Staff Relations Officer Wong Tai Sin District Lo Shui-lin (Best designed scarf) and Task Force Sub-unit Tseung Kwan O (Best participating unit).

In addition, Superintendent Emergency Unit KE Richard Sheridan was presented with an award, showing knitting is far from being a prerogarity for the fairer sex.

KE Senior Superintendent (Operations) Steve Handley who oversaw the project commented: "the project underscores the officers' effort to engage the community and at the same time discharging their social responsibility."
