Nineteen fight crime ambassadors, who are winners of the "Hang Seng Bank - Help the Police Fight Youth Crime Competition 2008", will visit Australia from July 22 to 29. At a prize presentation ceremony today (July 5), they received their awards and scholarships along with five other winners.

The biennial competition was organised by the Police with sponsorship from Hang Seng Bank. Featuring web games, essay writing, tests in leadership skills and project presentations in youth crime, it was aimed at fostering a healthy lifestyle among youngsters, heightening their awareness of crime prevention and encouraging them to help Police fight youth crime. A record number of more than 130 000 entries were received this year.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Tang King-shing, congratulated the winners and wished them a fruitful trip to Australia. He also reminded them the responsibility of being a fight crime ambassador.

"As you are enjoying the harvest of your efforts today, you are also shouldering a great responsibility. Being fight crime ambassadors, you can contribute to the fight against youth crime. You can set good examples for your peers and help enhance their alertness to drugs and crimes," Mr Tang said.

Also officiating at the ceremony, the Managing Director and Deputy Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank, Mr Joseph Poon, said, "Hang Seng Bank is pleased to have sponsored this important competition for the eighth consecutive time. It is encouraging to see a record number of entries as this suggests that more young people are concerned about fighting crime. Together with our highly efficient Hong Kong Police, we are committed to promoting a positive and healthy lifestyle among young people."

The 19 ambassadors comprise 15 winners from the secondary school and post secondary school categories, and four members of the champion group of the newly added youth service agency category. They will call on police departments, schools and youth organisations in Sydney and Melbourne during their trip.

Before their departure, they and the five winners of the primary school category will visit various Police formations.
