The Police Mentorship Programme (PMP) was first launched in 2004 as a proactive recruitment strategy to inspire university students to join the Force after graduation. Police Mentors acted as role models and led mentees from their alma mater to share with them knowledge, experience and challenges in their police career. Since 2018, PMP was extended to include Hong Kong students from Mainland and overseas universities.
Through PMP, mentees enjoy opportunities to participate in a diverse range of activities, such as visits to police units, interview workshops, and as summer/ winter interns across over a hundred different police units.
Since academic year (AY) 2023/24, PMP was expanded and revamped to encompass all post-secondary students, whose education attainment would meet the academic requirements for joining the Force upon graduation. Project ACHIEVE, which was launched in 2018 and targeted students of post-secondary institutions, shall be incorporated into PMP.
There are five streams under PMP, namely:
In recent years, 1 in 4 PMP (Hong Kong, Mainland and Overseas) mentees who applied for Probationary Inspector and 1 in 3 PMP (Tertiary and DAE) mentees (Former Project ACHIEVE members) who applied for Police Constable were successful. The success rates are significantly higher than the overall average success rate of 1 in 27 for Probationary Inspector, and 1 in 10 for Police Constable in the preceding 5 years.
Participating in different PMP activities inevitably enhanced my understanding towards police work. I have developed profound knowledge towards the diversity and hardship of policing via joining various visits to different police formations. The opportunity to perform as actors in major incident exercises displayed fully the intermeshing functions of different police departments, and attending the interview workshops improved my personal competence and interview techniques, which all solidified my determination to join the Force.
I consider PMP as a turning point of my life. Out of all the events of the programme, working in the Force unit as an intern left me the most profound impression. During the two-month internship, not only could I accrue relevant work experience early on, it also gave me a chance to understand the culture of the Force and challenges it faces. This experience has laid a more solid foundation for me to join the Force after graduation.
I appreciated my mentor for her altruistic guidance throughout my PMP tenure. She was not only a mentor of PMP, but also a mentor of my life, guiding me through whenever I lost my way in study or career. Fortunately, with my mentor shared her experience with me from time to time, I had a better understanding of what I should pursue at different stages of my life. Eventually, she led me to the path of joining the Force to pursue my initial wish of serving the public.
My mentors often spare their time to arrange interview and leadership workshops for mentees. Through practicing key points of each selection process and relevant techniques, I was able to understand my weaknesses and equipped myself in a more focused manner. Under the patient guidance of my mentors, I built up self-confidence gradually, passed the interview and eventually became a member of the Force.
I was a member of 2019 Project Achieve, which is the now PMP (DAE). I had the opportunity to attend a diverse range of activities, including visits to police units, interview workshops and physical fitness training, which equipped me better before I apply to join the Police Force. Mentors shared their own work experience and knowledge, which not only inspired me but also helped me overcome challenges during the selection process. I am now a proud member of the HKPF!
