Beware of Strangers (Children & Juveniles)

Crime Matters

Crime Prevention Bureau(CPB)

Parents and carers should from time to time remind their children to stay alert every single minute and be particularly mindful of strangers. Heighten their awareness of self-protection, and adopt suitable preventive measures to minimise the risk of being victims of crime.

Police Advice

Children & Juveniles
If a stranger asks you to go with him or her, you should:

  • Yell for help;
  • Hurry to a safe place such as your home or school;
  • Immediately tell your parents or someone you trust and contact the police.

Parents and Carers

  • Parents and carers should from time to time remind their children to stay alert, in particular:-
  1. Do not go with strangers;
  2. Should not take the lift alone with strangers;
  3. Should not walk home alone. Even if they do so, avoid using side streets and alleys;
  4. Shout for help if in danger, and run away in the opposite direction until reaching the busier streets where help can be sought;
  • Parents should pick up their children in person;
  • If any carers are assigned the task, remind them to stay watchful as well and: -
  1. Never indulge oneself in phone calls, games, chitchat with other carers, or any other activities that might distract him/her from the kids;
  2. Hold the hands of the children and never leave them out of sight;
  • School buses should pick up or drop off the kids at places as close to the school as possible, or where parents have agreed to meet; and
  • If any abnormal behaviour is noticed in a child (for instance, he/she bursts out crying, showing fear, or scream), do not hesitate to offer help and ask the child whether the person next to him/her is a relative or carer. Check with the child’s school in case of doubt, and contact the police if necessary.
