Apart from bringing maps, food, drinking water and other suitable equipment, hikers must also take into account the following safety tips:
Plan your itinerary and route in advance. Finish the journey before dark and stick to the main trails as far as possible;
Tell friends or family your hiking route and inform when completed;
Walk in a group;
Carry a mobile phone for emergency use;
Don't carry a large amount of cash or valuables;
If you spot any suspicious person, keep a distance and report to the Police;
If robbed, do not resist;
Note robbers' escape route, appearance, accent or other characteristic; and
In emergency, call "999".
