Rigorous enforcement action against illegal motor racing

A total of 55 persons were arrested and a further 5,565 summonsed or ticketed during a territory-wide crackdown on illegal motor racing. The operation was concluded last weekend.

The operation, codenamed "Fossington", was mounted in all regions between November 9 and 24 against illegal motor racing activities and other undesirable driving behaviour, such as speeding, dangerous or careless driving, failing to comply with traffic signals and vehicle modification.

During the operation, 4,387 speeding offences were detected, with 25 vehicles detained for examination. So far, 14 of them have been confirmed to have been modified and five are awaiting examination. Other offences include 100 drivers failing to comply with traffic signals, 74 seatbelt-related offences and 272 mobile phone offences. One driver was summonsed for dangerous driving while 49 drivers were summonsed for careless driving. In addition, 42 drivers were arrested for drink driving and 13 persons were arrested for other offences, such as being a wanted person and possession of dangerous drugs.

A Police spokesman noted that this high-profile operation had prevented road racing activities during the period of the Macau Grand Prix, and he reiterated that Police will not tolerate illegal motor racing at any time on roads and expressways across the territory. Similar operations will be held in future to ensure road safety in Hong Kong.
