Symposium on police studies to be held in Hong Kong

The Symposium on Police Studies of the Strait cum Hong Kong and Macao will be held on October 29 and 30 in the Police Headquarters in Wan Chai.

This is the first time that the Symposium is held in Hong Kong and the Force has been invited by the Police Association of China (PAC) to assist in organising the event.

Entitled "Police Studies and Practice of the New Century", the Symposium will cover three major themes: (1) Policing and enforcement against illegal Internet activities, (2) Quality and management of law enforcement agencies and (3) General police studies and researches on policing related issues.

A Police spokesman said that the Symposium would provide a platform for distinguished officials and scholars from the Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao to exchange views on the trends and developments of policing related subjects.

The Symposium would also benefit the Force in enhancing its understanding and collaboration with other academies and law enforcement agencies across the Strait.

"Through knowledge sharing, we can further raise the policing standards in these four places and establish close ties and cooperation in police studies," the spokesman added.

Officiating guests at the opening ceremony will include the President of PAC, Mr Tian Qiyu; the Secretary for Security, Mr Ambrose SK Lee; the Commissioner of Police, Mr Tang King-shing; and heads of delegates from Taiwan and Macao.

Some 130 delegates are expected to attend the Symposium. The last Symposium, held in Shanghai in 2006, attracted about 100 participants.
