Road safety campaign targeting drink driving
Police will conduct a territory-wide campaign to enhance public awareness of road safety with focus on anti-drink driving from tomorrow (September 28) to October 2.
Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams will invite members of the public to take voluntary breath tests and distribute publicity leaflets in bar areas to appeal to them not to drive after drinking. Strict enforcement action will also be taken against offenders during the same period.
Police figures showed that there were 9 917 traffic accidents in the first eight months of 2007, an increase of 94 cases when compared with the same period in 2006. Among these cases, 72 involved drink driving.
"Motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol. Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and three years' imprisonment and penalised for 10 driving-offence points or possible disqualification from driving," a Police spokesman said.
