CS visits Junior Police Call Summer Camp (with photos)

The Chief Secretary for Administration (CS), Mr Henry Tang, visited the Junior Police Call (JPC) Fight Crime Summer Camp at Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village today (August 17).

Mr Tang, together with the Secretary for Security (S for S), Mr Ambrose S K Lee, and the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Tang King-shing, officiated at an anti-crime ceremony to call on the campers to help Police fight crime and to stay away from drugs.

Before the ceremony, some 130 youngsters were formally appointed as JPC Advanced Leaders after receiving appointment certificates from S for S and CP.

Urging the Advanced Leaders to set a good example to other JPC members, Mr Lee said: "Although the total number of drug abusers has been decreasing recently, the number of young abusers has risen. Therefore, one should be careful in making new friends and choosing activities so as not to fall into drug abuse traps."

"Abusing psychotropic substances or drugs not only will cause permanent harm to body and health, it will also ruin your future," he added.

Mr Lee called on the young people to stay away from drugs and to participate in meaningful activities such as the summer camp in pursuing a positive and healthy lifestyle.

Meanwhile, about 30 JPC Advanced Leaders received JPC Environmental Badges from CP, the Chief Operating Officer of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, Mr Jon Addis; and the Chief Executive Officer of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Hong Kong, Mr Eric Bohm. They had completed a training programme on environmental protection and nature conservation.

The HSBC JPC Environmental Badge Scheme is the first badge scheme organised by the JPC. Funded by the Hongkong Bank Foundation with over $250,000 and co-organised by WWF Hong Kong, the scheme aims to raise environmental awareness among JPC members through the provision of education and training.

Mr Jon Addis said: "HSBC is a strong supporter of sustainable development. The Hongkong Bank Foundation is providing support for the environmental badge scheme as the Scheme's benefits go well beyond just the initial training. Through a 'train the trainer' approach, the 30 advanced leaders can become trainers and help organise training for 800 JPC leaders and members, creating a snowball effect."

Representatives of 20 JPC School Clubs were also presented with Letters of Appreciation for their continuous support for the JPC scheme.

The annual summer camp, organised by the Police with sponsorship and support from various organisations, is aimed at enhancing JPC members' awareness of crimes and promoting healthy living. About 1 300 JPC members take part in the camp this year which began on August 16 and will run until Sunday (August 19).

Anti-drug and fight crime messages are being disseminated to participants through a variety of activities including a seminar on cyber crime prevention, a fight crime slogan presentation competition, an anti-drug drama competition, singing performances, game booths and various sports activities.
