Man sentenced for conspiracy to use false instruments

A 22-year-old man convicted of theft and conspiracy to use false instruments was sentenced to 28 months' imprisonment at the District Court today (July 27).

The court heard that the man stole 74 letters from the mail-boxes of 38 residents of the building where he lived in Tai Kok Tsui between September and October 2006. The letters he stole comprised statements from banks, credit card and telecommunication companies as well as electricity, water and tax bills.

The case was taken over by the Commercial Crime Bureau. Investigations revealed that the man, conspired with another person, made an application for credit cards from a bank and a credit company by using false intruments including forged salary statement, employment letter and address. A total of $13,000 was drawn from the credit cards.

The man was arrested in his premises in Tai Kok Tsui on October 26, 2006 and was later charged.

He was convicted to the charges at the District Court and the sentence was handed down today.
