Territory-wide campaign to promote pedestrian safety
Police will run a one-week pedestrian road safety campaign from tomorrow (July 15) to July 21 to educate pedestrians, in particular the senior citizens, on road safety.
During the first two days, Police Regional Road Safety Teams will distribute publicity leaflets at about 45 locations in the territory to remind members of the public to comply with road safety regulations. Verbal warning will be given to offenders in the first two days and stringent enforcement action will be taken in the following five days.
A police spokesman said that common pedestrian offences included failing to comply with a light signal; crossing within 15 metres of a footbridge or a pedestrian subway other than using such facilities; climbing over a kerbside fence or through a central reservation onto a carriageway.
Police provisional figures show that a total of 40 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in the first six months of this year, an increase of six persons compared with the same period in 2006. Among the deceased, 62.5 per cent were over the age of 60. Of the 7 310 traffic accidents in the first six months of this year, about 23 per cent involved pedestrians, leaving 1 943 persons injured.
