Man sentenced for counterfeit banknotes related offence
A 43-year-old man was sentenced to one year and eight months' imprisonment upon conviction of counterfeit banknotes related offence at the District Court today (June 1).
The court heard that on August 23, 2006, the man patronized a money exchange shop at the Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation's Lo Wu Station to exchange 10 pieces of US$100 banknotes into Hong Kong dollars. The staff of the shop suspected the banknotes were counterfeit and reported to the Police. The man was arrested at scene and another 27 pieces of US$100 banknotes of US$100 banknotes were found from the pocket of his trousers.
The Commercial Crime Bureau took over the case for further investigations and the man was later charged with one count of dealing with property known or believed to represent proceeds of indictable offence and one count of custody of counterfeit banknotes with intent.
He pleaded guilty to the charge on custody of counterfeit banknotes with intent at the District Court on May 17, 2007 and the sentence was handed down today. The charge on dealing with property known or believed to represent proceeds of indictable offence will be left on court file.
