Man sentenced for using false instrument
A 60-year-old man convicted of using a false instrument and possessing false instruments with intent was sentenced to 24 months' imprisonment at Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (May 30).
The court heard that the man and a 53-year-old woman produced a US$ 1 million banknote and attempted to deposit it into their bank account newly opened at a bank in Central on September 22 last year.
Suspecting that the banknote was fake, the bank staff made a report to the Police. Police officers arrested the duo at scene and seized some false documents including bank statements and account reference letters from the woman's handbag.
They were subsequently charged with offences namely using a false instrument and possessing false instruments with intent. The man was sentenced to 24 months' imprisonment while the woman was acquitted in Eastern Magistrates' Courts today.
