Man arrested for blackmail
Police arrested a 26-year-old man yesterday (May 10) for blackmailing a number of local jewellery companies in Kowloon Region.
Officers of Regional Crime Unit Kowloon West arrested the man at his residence in Tai Wai, Shatin on Thursday (May 10) morning.
Police investigation revealed that in late September 2006, ten local jewellery companies in Kowloon West region received a blackmailing letter and the sender alleged that they have possessed evidences of illegal activities including tax evasion, smuggling, fraud and copyright infringement engaged by the companies.
The letter demanded the companies to pay HK$600,000 or the evidence would be submitted to the relevant enforcement authorities.
The victimized companies then reported the case to Customs & Excise Department and were later referred to the Police for further investigation.
Police investigation discovered that the 26-year-old arrested person was an ex-staff of one of the victimized companies and he was subsequently arrested.
The man is still being detained for enquiries.
