One man arrested for smuggling $30M electronic products
Marine Police arrested a 42-year-old man and seized a large quantity of electronic products worth some $31 million at Wong Shek Pier in Sai Kung this morning (March 6).
At about 7 am, Marine Regional Task Force and Small Boat Division were mounting an anti-smuggling operation off Long Harbour. A medium goods vehicle (MGV) was spotted approaching Wong Shek Pier from Pak Tam Road while three speedboats approaching the Pier at the same time.
The speedboats were seen unloading cargoes onto the MGV. When Marine Police officers took action, the speedboats fled and left behind some goods on the staircase at the pier.
The MGV was intercepted at scene and the 42-year-old male driver was arrested for assisting in exporting unmanifested cargo after failing to produce a valid manifest.
A total of 251 boxes of electronics products including video cameras, digital cameras, projectors, LCD displays as well as computer hard disks and chips worth about $31 million were seized at scene and on the MGV.
The arrestee is being detained for enquiries. The case will be handed over to the Customs and Excise Department for further actions.
