A total of 362 young people were commended today (February 10) at the Bronze Award Presentation Ceremony of the Hong Kong Award for Young People (HKAYP) for their enthusiasm and outstanding performance.
The awardees, comprising 44 police officers and 318 Junior Police Call members, received their bronze awards from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr Yam Tat-wing, and the Chairman of HKAYP Award Council, Mr Paul Fan, at the Police Sports and Recreation Club.
Commending the awardees, Mr Yam said: "In the award qualifying process, you learned the importance of team work, knew more about self-control and communication skills as well as acquired many other new skills. These laid the foundations for your future development."
"It is not an easy task to get a bronze award. It shows that you did work with great determination last year to complete the activities specified," he added.
During the ceremony, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Support), Mr Blaine Hoggard, presented Certificates of Appreciation to 133 instructors, including 70 police officers, in recognition of their commitment and dedication.
The HKAYP scheme is aimed at building up young people's confidence and developing their potentials. Participants aged between 14 and 25 will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals at different stages after completing specified activities in skills, service, expedition and physical recreation categories.
The Hong Kong Police Force first organised HKAYP activities at the Police Cadet School in 1973 and established the Hong Kong Police Operating Authority (HKPOA) in 1979, which is one of the 18 operating authorities of the scheme to co-ordinate relevant activities.
