Police to step up prosecutions against driving offences
Police will mount a territory-wide operation in the coming three weeks starting tomorrow (November 5) to deter motorists from undesirable driving behaviour.
The operation, codenamed "Fossington", will be targeting various offences including speeding, dangerous or careless driving, failing to comply with traffic signals and failing to wear seat belts.
The number of traffic accidents involving casualties amounted to 10 991 in the first three quarters in 2006, which saw a decrease of 1.5 percent when compared with the same period last year (provisional figure). The major causes of these accidents were following too closely to vehicle in front, vehicles losing control, changing lane carelessly, negligence and driving too fast for the conditions.
"Police will spare no efforts in tracking down road users who have little regard for their own safety as well as that of other people, especially those engaged in illegal road racing activities," a Police spokesman said.
"We hope that stringent enforcement actions can enhance public awareness of road safety and achieve the objective of our Road Safety Vision - Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal," he added.
