Man arrested for attempting to cause explosion

Police arrested a 21-year-old man for attempting to make explosive with intent to endanger life/property in Kowloon Bay yesterday (September 21).

Following further investigation into a recent incident in which people published an online message suggesting the use of explosive to threaten life/property, officers from the Technology Crime Division (TCD) of Police Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) arrested the 21-year-old man in Kowloon Bay last night for the offence of "attempting to make explosive with intent to endanger life/property" under Section 54 of the Crimes Ordinance, Chapter 200, Laws of Hong Kong. Two computers were seized during the arrest.

The man is still being detained in police custody pending further investigation. Investigations by TCD of CCB are continuing.

A Police spokesman said,"Attempting to cause explosion with intent to endanger life or property is a serious offence and any person who is convicted of the offence is liable to a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment."

He also reminded members of the public to use the Internet wisely and legally. All existing legislation which prohibit criminality in the "physical" world will equally apply to criminal acts committed in the "cyber" environment.
