Marine Police seized $8.1 million worth of suspected smuggled goods
Marine Police seized $8.1 million worth of suspected smuggled goods off Black Point in Tuen Mun last Saturday (April 1) during an anti-smuggling operation jointly conducted with the Customs and Excise Department.
At about 4.15 pm on April 1, officers of the Small Boat Division intercepted a Mainland cargo vessel with 43 containers onboard one nautical mile west of Black Point in Tuen Mun.
The vessel was escorted to the River Trade Terminal in Tuen Mun for further investigation and it was revealed that two of the containers, which were declared to contain scrap metal, were found to have consisted of a large number of printing machines, electric motors, film and film processing chemicals with a total value exceeding $8.1 million.
Two men on board the vessel, including a 37-year-old master and a 27-year-old purser, were initially arrested for attempting to export unmanifested cargo on the same day. They were subsequently released after further enquiries.
The case has been handed over to the Customs and Excise Department for further enquiries to identify the consignor and consignees of the contraband shipment.
