Appeal for blackmail and fraud victims to come forward

Police today (March 16) urged members of the public who might have fallen prey to blackmail and fraud to come forward.

The appeal was made after Police arrested a 32-year-old man for blackmail and fraud in Ngau Tau Kok yesterday (March 15).

The case came to light when two traffic accidents occurred within about an hour in Yau Ma Tei on March 12. In both cases, a man claimed that he was hit by a vehicle when he was crossing the road.

Further enquiries by detectives of Yau Tsim District revealed that the man was involved in at least 13 incidents of similar nature in Yau Ma Tei area since May 14 last year.

In these cases, the man demanded compensations ranging from under $100 to several hundred dollars from the drivers concerned after allegedly being injured in the accidents.

Should the drivers decide to make a report to the Police, the man would refuse to seek medical treatment and agree to settle the cases.

After intensive investigations, the man was arrested by officers of Yau Tsim District Anti-Triad Section (DATS) for blackmail and fraud at his residence in Ngau Tau Kok last night.

The man is still being detained for enquiries. Investigations by DATS of Yau Tsim District are proceeding.
