Marine Police seized about $35 million worth of suspected smuggled goods
Marine Police arrested two men following the seizure of $35 million worth of suspected smuggled goods off north of East Ping Chau last night (February 7).
At about 10.40 pm yesterday, officers of the Small Boat Division spotted an unlit cargo vessel steering towards north of East Ping Chau in an anti-crime and smuggling operation in marine east and north waters.
Police vessels then tailed on it and finally stopped the target vessel off north of East Ping Chau and took it back to East Ping Chau pier for enquiry.
About two million video compact discs in 1 363 boxes with a total market value of about $35 million were found on the vessel. Upon enquiries, no manifest could be produced for inspection and the two men, aged between 55 and 51, on board the cargo vessel were arrested for attempting to export unmanifested cargo.
They are still being detained for enquiries. The case will be handed over to the Customs and Excise Department for follow-up action.
