On the morning of June 15, whilst it was raining heavily and the organising committee was wondering if the Renegade Match in the afternoon could be held as scheduled, Mr Guy Shirra, former chairman of the Police Hockey Club from 1975 to 1980, sent the following message to Renegade team members.
"The Renegades, RHKP Old & Bold and others, if you have the time, please come along and cheer us all on or yell abuse at the umpire ... bring a brolly! ... Today we finally hold the Final Match, there being so few original Renegades left who can pick up a stick let alone run around on a pitch. But, I shall be playing, ... Today, the winners will get the Shield and the losers the Plate, assuming that we can play as heavy rain is falling and forecast to continue all day."
The weather was not bad in the afternoon when the match was carried out. Both teams enjoyed a great match with a result of 4:4.
During the after-match social gathering, Mr Duncan McCosh, Mong Kok District Commander, shared his experience in the Police Hockey Club in 1980s and 1990s and the interesting history of the club and Renegade Match.
Mr Michael Yip, Chairman of the Police Hockey Club, said: "When I first joined the club in 1990s, I was one of the few local officers. At that time, the club mainly consisted of expatriate police and army officers. In the past 20 years, the club experienced tremendous localisation. At present, it has one men's team and one ladies' team, both filled by all local officers."
This summer, the club is running the following training sessions.
Outdoor Field Hockey
Date: June 8 to August 13 (Every Saturday)
Time: 0840 - 1000 hours
Venue: Rugby Pitch, PSRC
Remark: Participants have to bring along their own hockey sticks.
Indoor Hockey
Date: July 2 to August 27 (Every Tuesday)
Time: 1830 - 2000 hours
Venue: Indoor Basketball Court, PSRC
Equipment: The Hockey Club will provide indoor hockey sticks for participants.
