PPRB's replies to the media

A letter was sent to an English-language paper refuting its report on July 3, which featured allegations of nepotism and a "cap" on the number of expatriate officers to be promoted.

The letter reiterated that local and expatriate officers were both integral parts of the Force, and the promotion system was solely based on merits - race and gender were not criteria.

It said 73 expatriate officers had been promoted to ranks from Chief Inspector to Assistant Commissioner since July 1997, and that the current promotion system was working well. It pointed out that Police treasured the loyal and dedicated service both expatriate and local officers provided to the Force and the community, and reiterated the former would continue to be an asset to the Force for many more years.

  • Letters were sent to five Chinese-language papers refuting their stories run July 11, which claimed officers shouted for help and activated emergency switches on their beat radios during a suspected triad fight in Mong Kok. The allegations were misleading and tarnished the Force image, the letters said.

Reports that some arrested persons had tried to help others arrested to escape, were also untrue. The letters clarified that swift action was taken and sufficent manpower was deployed, and the Force had the determination and capability to fight triads.
