Yau retains squash supremo title

Reigning champion Yau Wing-wah defended his title in the Police Squash Club Closed Championships final at the Police Officers' Club courts on May 24.

Yau beat determined challenger Leung Chi-man 9-6, 9-4, 4-9, 9-4 to retain his stronghold on the competition, despite the latter's gutsy performance which saw him demolish several strong players to reach the final.

Meanwhile, the Chairman's Cup final went to Chan Hok-ming who beat Chan Po-sing 8-10, 2-9, 9-0, 9-2, 9-5 in a fiercely contested match that saw many long rallies.

The main Plate Competition saw Carven Ng Chi-ho beat Andy Phillips 10-8, 9-2, 9-7, while the Chairman's Plate went to Li Kin-wah who defeated Yuen Wai-cheong 9-5, 9-2, 9-1.

Making its debut in the championship programme, the Ladies Cup, held the day before, saw Cecilia Siu Ching-man beat a courageous Carol Cheng Mei-lin 9-7, 9-6, 9-7. The Player of the Year award was also announced at the event, going to Phillip Ko Kwok-wai for his excellent performance in the Winter League and his top contribution to the running of the Club.

Prizes were presented at the Club's annual general meeting held after the competition. Committee members were also elected for the 2001/2002 season. They were: Peter Barnes, Chairman; Donnie Choy Yuk-kwong, Vice Chairman and Social Convenor; Kenny Ip Lau-chuen, Treasurer; Fred Tsui Chung-wai, Secretary; Nelson Chiu Ho-wah, Uniform and Equipment; and, Leung Chi-man, Training and Development.

Regular, Auxiliary and civilian staff and their families were welcome to join the Club and partake in its many activities.
