Goodwill globetrotters return

A fur-rocious display in Auckland!

Fourteen fight crime ambassadors returned with new knowledge and friendship August 9 after a 13-day goodwill visit to Australia and New Zealand.

The team, comprising four young men and 10 young women aged 14 to 22, were award winners in the recent Help Police Fight Youth Crime Competition.

They visited police formations and assorted schools, exchanging fight crime ideas with their new Aussie and Kiwi friends and enhancing ties between police and youngsters of Hong Kong and the two countries.

The team flew to Auckland July 28, learning how dog teams formed an integral part of New Zealand's policing, and enjoyed a special harbour tour on a police launch.

They departed for Melbourne August 1, getting a taste of timeless Australian culture and history through the Worowa Aboriginal College.

A visit to the Victoria Police open day brought helicopter and dog rescue demonstrations and a glimpse at mounted police beats. They were officially welcomed by Victoria's Chief Commissioner Neil Comrie, before putting policing aside to try a little more Australiana such as gold panning and Australian Rules football.

A quick stop in the country's capital Canberra followed, the team visiting the National Aquarium and a wildlife park.

On to Sydney, and apart from the obligatory Harbour Bridge and Opera House visits, the team also checked out the state-of-the-art Olympic Stadium. A press session was also held in the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, the ambassadors offering their thoughts to the Aussie media, before returning to home.

The biennial fight crime competition has been held since 1975 to tap the youths' fight-crime aspirations and enhance their anti-crime awareness.
