The Regional Missing Persons Unit of Kowloon East (KE), in collaboration with the Fire Services Department, Civil Aid Service, Government Flying Service, Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, various mountaineering organisations and educational groups, organised the Project HILL PAL Orienteering Award Presentation cum Student Ambassador Appointment Ceremony at the Sai Kung Country Park Visitor Centre on December 16, 2023 to strengthen public awareness of mountaineering safety.

Director of Operations Chan Tung made an opening speech at the ceremony. The Junior Police Call Honorary Presidents from KE who sponsored 240 secondary school students to participate in the Certificate Course in Mountaineering, together with the Districts’ representatives, presented appointment certificates to the students, encouraging them to promote mountaineering safety. An educational publicity video on mountaineering safety starring artistes Ms Ho Wing-cheuk and Mr Wu Zhao-lin was premiered. Moreover, representatives and experts from search and rescue (SAR) departments and mountaineering organisations were arranged to demonstrate the equipment for SAR and share the challenges in SAR operations and hiking precautions.

In addition to hosting an inter-school orienteering competition, the event featured interactive booth games and showcased a diverse array of mountaineering SAR equipment. Spanning across multiple locations, including the Lion Pavilion in Wong Tai Sin, Clearwater Bay Country Park, Sai Kung Waterfront Park, and Sai Kung Pak Tam Au, the promotional activities garnered the participation of more than 700 hikers, who recognised the importance of “hiking with pals and leaving digital footprints before hiking”.
