NTN
To promote cycling safety, Traffic New Territories North (T NTN) launched Project SUNSHINE on August 5. A series of education and enforcement actions were conducted at cycling hotspots between August and September. On August 26, in collaboration with Road Safety Patrol (New Territories North Region) and various government departments, as well as youth, uniformed and volunteer groups, T NTN held the “Bike Fun, Celebrate Safety” bicycle parade and carnival at Pak Shek Kok Promenade.
Superintendent of Investigation and Support Division of T NTN Lam Chi-yuen officiated at the event and presented certificates of appreciation to the participating organisations. He stated in his speech that to encourage interaction between youngsters and the Force, youth volunteer groups were invited to collaborate with different organisations for promoting and advocating road safety so that fatal and serious accidents involving cyclists would be reduced.
The bicycle parade led by officers from T NTN set off from Tai Po Yuen Chau Tsai Park and rode approximately three kilometers along the Tolo Harbour Cycling Track to the carnival venue. In addition to game booths, the carnival featured music and artistic cycling performances and police dog demonstrations, all of which aims at reminding the public of safety precautions when cycling.
In the first half of 2023, NTN recorded a total of 529 bicycle accidents. In accordance with the Force’s Selected Traffic Enforcement Priorities 2023, T NTN will enhance enforcement against cycling offences and continue engaging different stakeholders in the region to promote cycling safety with a view to achieving “Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong’s Goal”.
HKI
To tie in with the start of the new school year, Traffic Hong Kong Island (T HKI) launched an enforcement operation codenamed SHELLPUSHER in the Districts within HKI on September 4 and 5 to combat traffic violations related to the safety of school children.
Officers of the Road Safety Team of T HKI distributed leaflets outside kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools to remind students that they must fasten the seatbelt when travelling in a vehicle, cross the road safely and make good use of the four designated road crossing facilities, namely the light signal crossing, footbridge, pedestrian subway and zebra crossing. Officers also hosted a live-streaming seminar in Hennessy Road Government Primary School to explain the points to note about road safety and broadcast a short video about traffic safety to over 700 teachers and students of the school.
