To widely alert the public to pickpockets, New Territories North (NTN) joined hands with the Police Community Relations Offices in the Districts to initiate the four-week anti-pickpocketing operation on August 23. Community resources, including the District Fight Crime Committees, Junior Police Call and Senior Police Call in the Districts, were utilised.
Crime NTN invited the Task Force Sub-unit of Railway District to brief frontline officers on the common and latest modus operanti of pickpockets for preventing and combating pickpocketing. In August, a pickpocketing syndicate in Yuen Long District was identified, with two female suspects being arrested. It was believed that the two suspects were involved in ten pickpocketing cases amounting to $100,000 across Districts.
Moreover, NTN officers designed banners and leaflets to promote “Spot Pickpocketing and Report”, especially at high-risk locations prone to pickpocketing incidents and crowded areas. Tailor-made audio recordings were also produced and broadcast in wet markets, at MTR and LRT stations, and inside train compartments.
NTN hopes that the goal of “Spot Pickpocketing and Report” can be achieved through engaging the efforts of various stakeholders in the community and encouraging the citizens to display their spirit of mutual caring and support through the operation.
