Yuen Long District (YLDIST) has launched Project WINDBREAK since 2020 to raise villagers’ understanding of typhoon precaution and aftermath measures to strengthen their response capabilities against disasters. In mid-June this year, YLDIST, together with representatives and volunteers from the Fire Services Department (FSD), Home Affairs Department (HAD), Drainage Services Department (DSD), Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), Civil Aid Service (CAS), Junior Police Call (JPC), Senior Police Call (SPC) and Fire Safety Ambassador Honorary Presidents’ Association (FSAHPA), visited villages in Yuen Long where flooding was comparatively severe. Waterproof fortune bags containing small torches, whistles, waterproof phone covers and informative leaflets were distributed. The Honorary Presidents Councils of YLDIST JPC, YLDIST SPC and FSAHPA show their support for this year’s project by donating flood prevention sandbags to the villagers.
YLDIST, in conjunction with the FSD, HAD, Hong Kong Observatory, DSD, CEDD, CAS and Community Resilience Service of Hong Kong Red Cross, held a seminar on response to disasters at Yuen Long Town Hall on July 4. In the seminar, preparation for the rain and typhoon season and knowledge about emergency response were explained, while safety measures for post-disaster reconstruction were shared to help villagers get well prepared before calamities take place.
